Nigeria will spend 2.2 billion naira ($18.8 million) this year improving its control of livestock diseases, the Daily Trust reported, citing Agriculture Minister Abba Ruma.
The west African nation's government and the Food and Agricultural Organization will train rural farmers on safe and hygienic ways of collecting, processing and storing meat and dairy products, the Lagos-based newspaper said.
The government will also improve surveillance of livestock to ensure the safety of meat supplies, the newspaper said.
In 2006, Nigeria became the first country in Africa to report an outbreak of the H5N1 strain of bird flu.
