The Ugandan government plans to close portions of lakes to allow restocking of fish amidst increasing depletion of the resource.
The Minister of State for Fisheries, Mr Fred Mukisa, said Lakes Kyoga, Albert, Edward, and Victoria will be affected. He said the closure would be gradual and in consultation with the affected fishing community.
Mukisha said the government was concerned about declining fish stocks and fish poisoning. He said fish exports have declined from US$150 million to less than US$ 100 million in the last three years.
