Exports of organic products are expected to triple from the $22m annually to over $60m when the African Organic Centre for Excellence is set up in Uganda.
“We expect to double this in the next 12 months and triple it after the centre is completed in Nkozi,” said Othieno Odoi, the senior trade officer in-charge of market product at the Uganda Exports Promotions Board.
The centre, the first of its kind on the continent, would be set up at the Uganda Martyrs University, Nkozi. Donors are expected to fund the project.
Prof. Martin Olwenyi, the vice-chancellor, said the would provide research and training in organic agriculture.
“We are holding a donors’ conference in September 16 to raise the money,” he said.
